In early 2021, Global News reported that during the COVID-19 pandemic more Canadians were turning to microdosing psychedelics to deal with stress and anxiety.
Growing interest
A hiking and psychedelics group in Edmonton saw its membership grow, with people of very different ages and professions. A local psychologist said that requests for help with integrating psychedelic experiences went from occasional to weekly.
Caution from experts
A scientist interviewed for the story pointed out that effects vary a lot from person to person and that psychedelics do not necessarily treat mental health problems. Several people featured got their substances on the illegal market, where quality and content are uncertain.
The legal picture in Canada
Psilocybin is illegal in Canada without an exemption. At the time, Health Canada had granted exemptions to a few dozen people, mostly patients at the end of life.
Our view
If you are struggling with anxiety or depression, please talk to a doctor or mental health professional first. Microdosing is not a replacement for professional care.
